IMPACT
Be part of the change.
Every donation, big or small, fuels sustainable farming practices that preserve biodiversity, combat climate change, and empower farmers around the globe.
With your support, we champion vital projects including farmer-to-farmer knowledge exchanges, community seed banks, farmer-led research and plant breeding, and co-ops that help farmers enhance their incomes by bringing healthy food to local markets.
Guided by the principles of food sovereignty and agroecology, we embrace transformative concepts championed by farmers’ movements to create a just and sustainable world.
The time to act is now
Our current food systems are under immense pressure. Industrial agriculture has led to soil degradation, loss of biodiversity, and increased greenhouse gas emissions.
We can address the pressing issues of climate change and biodiversity loss by ensuring small-scale farmers have the tools and support they need to practice agriculture humanely, sustainably, and with built-in resilience. With climate change accelerating, there’s no better time to act than now.
Seeds: the heart of our mission
Seeds are the foundation of agriculture. It is quite simple: without seed, our food supply becomes significantly limited. Virtually all the food we eat begins with the planting of a seed.
At SeedChange, we promote the use of diverse, locally-adapted seeds that thrive without chemical inputs. By preserving and sharing these seeds, we protect biodiversity and empower farmers to grow resilient crops that can withstand climate challenges.
Support farmers in Canada and around the world
Small-scale farmers are the backbone of global food production and the heroes of our food systems. Their dedication and hard work ensure we have food on our tables every day.
By supporting SeedChange, you empower over 35,000 farmers across Canada and around the world. Your contribution honours their vital role and provides them with the resources and training to adopt sustainable farming practices. This not only improves their livelihoods; it also strengthens entire communities. Explore our Canadian and International programs.
Invest in a better food future.
We invite you to join us in planting the seeds of tomorrow. Together, we can cultivate a brighter future where communities thrive and sustainable food systems are the norm.
About SeedChange
LOCALLY-LED PROGRAMS
At SeedChange, every project we undertake is shaped by the needs and ideas of farmers. As stewards of our food systems, farmers are highly impacted by seed diversity loss. Our work trusts their expertise and experience to lead the way. We design our programs collaboratively with local partners, ensuring our approach is informed by local expertise. We believe in working in solidarity with local civil society and community leadership to create sustainable and impactful change.
79 YEARS OF IMPACT
Founded in 1945 by Dr. Lotta Hitschmanova as the Unitarian Service Committee of Canada, SeedChange has a rich history of dedicated community service. Dr. Hitschmanova’s vision for positive social impact has guided us through decades of addressing global challenges. Since transitioning to SeedChange in 2019, we have continued her legacy with a renewed focus on fostering resilient and sustainable food systems, improving lives and building stronger communities around the world.
A HOLISTIC APPROACH
We focus on agroecological seed and farming systems. There is a growing consensus on the way forward to grow food and seed sustainably: agroecology. Farmers who practice agroecology require seeds that will perform well in their farming systems. Our work focuses on filling this critically-underserved need. Designed to create enduring impact, our work drives long-term improvements in both communities and ecosystems, fostering a more equitable and sustainable future for all.
